The convention on the rights of persons with disabilities, the constitution of Kenya 2010, the persons with disabilities act, public service guidelines and disability policy all talk about giving employment to persons with disabilities. The biggest issue is the implementation of this documents. For example, public service employment guidelines have empowered employers if necessary to ring-fence any employment position to person or persons with disabilities who have applied for the job. Also, the constitution of Kenya in Article 54 (2) states ‘The state shall ensure the progressive implementation on the principle that at least 5% of the members of the public in elective and appointive bodies are persons with disabilities’
We continue to lobby the relevant authorities, agencies and the private sector to implement the provisions in these documents.
